Protect Your Back!

The back is a tricky area when it comes to pain and/or injury.  When we strain our backs, continuing to push through it can cause either a major back injury or compensations injuries/pains.  When the back muscles are not working properly, it can cause many other muscles to kick in to try to do the work, including abdominals, hip flexors, glutes, or other back muscles.  For a short time with light weight, this is not a big problem, but when you get to lifting heavier weights/objects or try to push through it for more than a couple days, problems happen!

When you start feeling back pain or tightness, take a day or two to mobilize and do active rest: roll out with a foam roller or lacrosse ball and do prolonged stretching (2 minutes or longer holding time).  If that doesn’t clear it up, you need to address it with a trained professional.  Manual therapy techniques, including dry needling, myofascial release, and joint mobilizations, help to bring you back to your 100%.
