Most likely if you don’t have knee pain, you know someone who does. Knee pain is a common occurrence with many people. We frequently see people at the gym wearing neoprene knee braces or runners wear a knee band.
Unfortunately, those just mask the problem rather than fix the problem, if they even help at all.
Knee pain is typically a symptom of another issue rather than the knee itself. Many times, knee pain is a result of something in the hip or foot and ankle complex not functioning right. The most common problems are weak feet, immobile ankles, and unstable hips. But, there are many more reasons besides those that cause knee pain.
Knee pain can also be caused by poor motor control or biomechanics. If you are not kneeling, squatting, bending, etc. with good mechanics, the knees tend to take the force. And I can tell you from experience that most people do not know how to perform these movements properly.
Many times, if we can re-train mechanics and address the hip and foot/ankle dysfunctions, the knee pain will go away as well.
Now, I am not saying that there can’t be other reasons for knee pain. It is possible that something is torn in your knee and needs to be addressed, but more often than not, conservative treatments such as physical therapy and prolotherapy will do the trick.
